Stop Killing Media
published onThe Stop Killing Games initiative recently secured over One Million signatures in it’s petition to the EU and this has reignited the conversation about digital ownership and media ownership in general.
For a long time, since at least when I was in high school I have been an advocate of media ownership and as far as I am concerned: If I paid for it then I own it, regardless of any legal technicality. Therefore anything designed in a manner that prevents me from treating my media in this manner, either through the use of abrasive DRM, always online requirements or otherwise I have no interest in.
I do not use streaming services for many reasons including this. I buy my music on CD, Cassette and Vinyl depending on which format seems the most appropriate or which is available. I paid for it, I own it, I’m ripping it and putting it on whatever devices I please. Simple as.
Seeing this initiative is refreshing, I care not for lolbertarian arguments of “government bad” or corporate arguments of “unreasonable cost”. Nonsense and irrelevant. But regardless of the outcome of the initiative it is important that you OWN YOUR MEDIA on your own terms and don’t settle for anything less than ownership. It may be less convenient but it is dignified.
There is no point in me repeating information about this movement here when I can direct you straight to the source. So please check out the initiative and it’s founder Ross Scott.

Remember: If buying isn’t ownership then piracy isn’t theft.
